The town centre Wifi network gives the public limited free internet access within the designated areas. It is quick and easy to sign up to the service; users simply search ‘Tunbridge Wells Wifi’ and access it via facebook, twitter or by filling out the registration form.

The Wifi was deployed by MLL Telecom at no cost to the borough council and uses existing street furniture, mainly CCTV camera columns, for the equipment needed to provide the service.

Dave Pinnington, Director of Regional Networks, MLL Telecom says: “Our aim is to work with local communities to serve their needs, so we’re delighted to be able to work with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council on this initiative.

“Not only will it offer improved connectivity to residents and businesses, but it also opens the doors to visitors to find out more about the region and get online to share their experiences.  Many studies put free public Wifi at the top of tourist wish lists, so we hope this initiative will help enhance the Tunbridge Wells visitor economy.”

The first phase of the project is now live and future deployment with coverage in the wider town centre is expected in a few months.  The borough council are keen to promote the use of the ‘Pay by Phone’ service and allow visitors to easily pay for and extend their car parking.  Information on this service is found in car parks and on the Council’s website.

Hilary Smith, Royal Tunbridge Wells Councillor stated, “Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is delighted that the first phase of the Royal Tunbridge Wells town centre Wifi network is up and running. This has been an important project for the Council as it seeks to support the vitality of the town centre.

“The Wifi platform will provide an opportunity for town centre retailers and other businesses to interact with consumers, advertise and promote themselves via the web. It will also support tourism and visitor engagement in the town centre allowing easy access to the visittunbridgewells website that is to be re-launched very soon. Car parking will become easier through the pay by phone facility. The Council is looking forward to working with MLL on the next phase of the roll-out.”

The use of superfast broadband has become imperative for small businesses who want to expand and improve. “SFBB is serving SMEs well and has become a critical enabler for many; it is changing the way businesses operate, increasing agility and productivity in new and novel ways” (Plymouth University 2011).

According to the Government Communications Minister Ed Vaizey, "this exciting technology is essential to modern business life whether you are a high-tech start-up or an established family firm in an industry, such as tourism or manufacturing". "It will become even more essential in the increasingly 'connected world' of the future," he stated (CRB 2014).

Research carried out by the University of Plymouth indicated that superfast broadband saved 82.9% of businesses time and/or money, while 57.9% felt that it had enabled their business to grow and it allowed 61.4% to work in new and different ways.

Superfast broadband has a pivotal role in delivering value through new found efficiencies and savings. The use of Cloud services, Skype communication and VoIP services for business are emerging as major positive game changers as a result of superfast broadband. The greater use of social networking sites helps build better relationships with both suppliers and customers (Plymouth University 2011). Businesses are able to reach and attract new customers through internet based communication and promotion, and provide new services.

Another invaluable addition to small businesses and their communities is the creation of new jobs. Businesses reported an increase in sales and efficiency and the upgrade enabled them to access wider markets so therefore needed new staff to keep up with the workload (SERIO & Buckman Associates 2011).

The University of Exeter Business School and One Planet MBA reported “productivity improvements were estimated at between 10-20%” due to the ability to work concurrently, the improvement in staff morale, quicker and remote access to and processing of information, reduced travel time and better communication.

MLL Telecom, in partnership with Tendring District Council, is in the process of rolling out a service across Tendring District. The first phase of this saw us delivering a solution along Clacton sea front to enable visitors and residents to get online during the Clacton Airshow 2013.

Since then we have been working on deploying the second phase of delivering superfast broadband out to Business Parks with packages from £75.

We have been working with businesses to get this service ready for roll-out; the service is available on Gorse Lane now and the first customers are live at 40Mbps.

We would like to discuss our new service with you and find out about your own personal experiences and requirements for broadband to see if our service would be of benefit and interest to you.

We are taking orders now on Gorse Lane Business Park, and would like to welcome you to our launch event at the Enterprise Centre, 1-2 Davy Road on Wednesday 16th July which to find our more about your broadband requirements.

Last week the Government announced the successful bids for its £10m Innovation Fund. The pot of money available is to be used to explore ways to introduce superfast broadband to the most remote and hardest to reach places in the UK.

The eight shortlisted pilots will explore how to expand coverage in remote areas, using fixed wireless and satellite technologies, a social investment financial model and an operating model which aggregates small rural networks, to ensure no-one is left behind in the digital slow lane.

Many small regional broadband projects run into difficulties because they have to act as both a network provider and a retail ISP. To be able to attract government grants and meet EU state aid rules the network must be open access and capable of wholesale to other providers. MLL Telecom is proud to have been allocated funds to deploy a wholesale platform designed to make it easier for infrastructure providers and communities to deploy rural networks.

Culture Secretary Sajid Javid said: “Our nationwide rollout is progressing at a terrific rate and each week superfast speeds are becoming a reality for tens of thousands of homes and businesses in rural areas across the UK. We know how important this “fourth utility” has become which is why we are investing £10m in these pilots to explore how we can extend coverage beyond the 95% of the UK we are on track to deliver by 2017.”

The wholesale platform will allow network providers to easily 'plug in' to the wholesale platform and allow specialist ISPs to deliver services to customers, thus creating a two tier approach and removing much of the complexity of building rural networks. This approach should increase the likelihood of successful community projects and provide scale and speed to rural deployments.

As part of the project MLL Telecom will be building a small fixed wireless access (FWA) network in Kent with target areas for the service being identified alongside Kent County Council. MLL Telecom will be working with specialist ISPs to deliver services to both businesses and consumers in Kent.

David Pinnington, Head of Rural Networks at MLL Telecom said: “We are delighted to be working with Kent as part of the BDUK Innovation Programme. Providing a simple and easy wholesale platform to Wireless ISPs will open up the market for small regional deployments and provide scale for the estimated >1 million properties left in the final 5%.”

MARLOW, UK, 23 January 2014 – MLL Telecom, one of the UK’s leading providers of fully managed networks, has partnered with Tendring District Council to deliver superfast broadband to business parks in the district. The project, now in its second phase, will see the roll-out of Metro WiFi in business parks, rural communities and holiday parks across the coastal towns of Clacton, Frinton, Walton and Harwich. Businesses that have no Internet access or suffer from very low speeds at present will be able to tap into up to 40Mbps connectivity speeds in February 2013 with a variety of packages ranging from £75 - £125 per month.

Cllr Sarah Candy, Portfolio Holder for Inward Investment and Growth at Tendring District Council explained: “Broadband connectivity drops off very rapidly outside town centres where the business parks are located. Poor Internet connectivity is leaving Tendring businesses at a disadvantage compared with more urban areas, and even forcing some to relocate. It will still be some time before a fibre connection is available, so with help from MLL Telecom we facilitated the deployment of Metro WiFi to deliver superfast broadband, with the aim of encouraging economic development and providing improved access to services for the whole district.”

The first phase of the deployment saw free WiFi installed along the seafront in time for the 2013 Clacton Airshow on the 22nd and 23rd of August. It was available for the 160,000 visitors to post their photos and videos online and allowed local traders to use their laptops on their stalls to run their business.

David Pinnington, Head of Rural Networks at MLL Telecom said: “We are committed to delivering local connectivity solutions to rural areas of the UK such as Tendring currently without widespread superfast broadband, helping to safeguard their competitiveness in today’s digital economy.”

An open day is being held on Tuesday 28th January from 11am – 7pm at the Clacton Enterprise Centre in Davy Road for businesses who want to find out more about the services available and whether it’s the right option for them. There is no need to book, just pop along, without obligation, to get further information on coverage, speeds and pricing / package options.
